Are Hurricane Prone Areas Losing Population Due To Fear Of Storms Or Housing Slowdown?

May 31st, 2008

Owning real estate in hurricane prone regions of the country has always had it’s risks. So after a particularly bad stretch of storms over the past few years one would expect the population to decline.

And it has, by about 1 percent since 2000.

Coastal-living-in-southOf course, according to the study by USA Today, the regions hardest hit by Katrina are the ones which have lost the greatest population. That is obvious as they are still rebuilding nearly 3 years later.

What is interesting is how the housing slowdown has played into this. For  Has the housing slowdown affected those trying to move to Florida from the north? I think so.

First selling a home in the upper Midwest and northeast has been tough. Add to that the falling housing prices in Florida. This combination has not rushed potential buyers to make that buying decision.

So will this trend continue? I doubt it.

The lure of coastal living is too strong to the human spirit. Once housing prices stabilize and the market regains it’s equilibrium, I think the trend of buyers to the coast will continue as strongly as it has before the series of storms and the housing slowdown. Hurricanes be damned.

The number of people who live in coastal areas that are most vulnerable to wind and water has fallen slightly since 2000, reversing a boom that brought tens of thousands of homes and high-rises to low-lying regions from Texas to Georgia, a USA TODAY analysis shows.

About 2.1 million people live full-time in those areas, down less than 1% over the past eight years.

That doesn’t mean Americans are thinking twice about living in vulnerable spots, says Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute. Instead, he says, the slowdown is more likely a result of a housing market crunch that’s left some homes vacant — and others half-built — in once fast-growing parts of the South. USATODAY.com

50 Cent’s Long Island Home Burns Down - Was It Arson?

May 31st, 2008

50-Cents-House-Before-FireThe Dix Hills home of Rap star 50 Cent burned down in what investigators have deemed suspicious. The home was being lived in by Curtis Jackson’s (50 Cent’s real name) former girlfriend, his 10 year old son, and her family.

What has raised the concern of investigators was that earlier this week a violent discussion broke out during a hearing over a 50 million dollar lawsuit the former longtime girlfriend was bringing against 50 Cent.

The Dix Hills home, a 5,200 square foot mansion was valued at over 2.4 million dollars, was being hotly contested in the battle between Tomkins and Jackson. While 50 Cent was in Louisiana filming a movie, his ex girlfriend points the finger right in his direction.

50-cents-house-after-fire“He tried to kill me and his own child,” said Shaniqua Tompkins, 31, who miraculously survived the suspicious 4 a.m. blaze, which leveled the $2.4 million mansion in tony Dix Hills, where she lives with the rapper’s 10-year-old son Marquise and four relatives.
The blaze erupted after Tompkins and 50 Cent — whose real name is Curtis Jackson — got into a violent dispute Monday during a deposition in a $50 million lawsuit she is bringing against him.
“Who do I think did it? Curtis Jackson,” Tompkins told The Post. “He threatened me on Monday that he was going to have someone visit me. My kids are in the house. Who would try to kill your own kids? He’s supposed to be all about being a gangster … that’s not a gangster, that’s a coward.”
The blaze was deemed suspicious by authorities in Dix Hills, though cops had no suspects.

Arizona RE Bloggers Network May Meeting Summary

May 31st, 2008

The week just flew by. Hello. Its Friday night already.

The highlight of the week for me was of course Thursday. I was the substitute presenter at the Arizona RE EV Blogging Networks monthly gathering. Jay Thompson, The Phoenix Real Estate Guy, was not able to do the kick off Wordpress training and so I had the honor of stepping in. It was a lot of fun actually. I want to thank everyone for showing up and for your enthusiasm. It is always a pleasure to talk about blogging.

My presentation was a very basic over view of how to set up a Wordpress blog and all that good stuff. It went well for the most part, but the area where I felt I was weak was in actually getting people to start a blog. A few people did end up setting up blogs, but many seemed to just want to listen and take notes. Which is fine. As promised I have uploaded my powerpoint presentation.

A lot of folks out there are hungry to learn about blogs and how to blog. If you have questions and concerns, why don’t you leave a comment on this post and I’ll try to answer it - or someone else could and that way we build a repository of information for agents and lenders eager to learn about blogging. You can still write to me directly if you wish too.

Some of the usual suspects were there - like Christoph, Nick and Doreen. Many thanks to Candace and Shelli for all their hard work in putting this meeting together. Also the our sponsors. Thank you all. See you next month.
